Helmut Newton (1920, Berlin - 2004, Los Angeles)
He was one of the most influential photographers of all time. Newton was a profilic, widely imitated fashion photographer whose provocative, erotically charged black and white photos were a mainstay of Vogue and other magazines. He achived international fame in the 1970's while working for French Vogue, and his celebrity and influence grew over the decades. Contraversal scenarios, bold lightening, and striking compositions came to form his signature look. He established a particular style marked by erotic, stylised scenes, often with sado-masochistic and fetishistic subtext. Working and living in close companionship with his wife - June Brunell a.k.a. Alice Springs- until his death, his images remain as distinctive, seductive and original as ever. Helmut Newton has always been very much more than a fashion photographer - he has fundamentaly changed the terms of the fashion image.
